In Switzerland, there are clear regulations for e-scooters, which are categorised as light motorbikes. These vehicles may have a maximum output of 500 watts and may not travel faster than 20 km/h without pedal assistance.

Certain safety equipment is mandatory: a bell as an acoustic warning device, a friction brake and fixed bicycle lights with a white light at the front and a red light at the rear. These lights must not dazzle and must be visible at night for at least 100 metres. A reflector is also required. It is important that the lights are also switched on during the day.

A category M driving licence is only required for drivers between the ages of 14 and 16; a driving licence is no longer required from the age of 16. Neither a licence plate nor registration of the vehicle is required, and there is no obligation to wear a helmet, although wearing a helmet is recommended.
